Email links that open the app

Email providers rewrite every link for click tracking, so a link to your app ends up on the provider's domain and opens the browser. Point your click-tracking domain at us instead, and taps on those links open the app on the right screen. The provider still counts every click, and people without the app still reach the web page.

How it works

  1. 01

    Add the tracking domain

Choose your provider. Its tracking host and click paths are filled in for you to check.

  2. 02

    Repoint its DNS

Once the provider shows the domain as verified, change its CNAME to us. Every request is passed on to the provider unchanged, so tracking and unsubscribe pages keep working.

  3. 03

    Add it to your app

The domain goes in your associated domains and intent filters. Only the click paths open the app.

  4. 04

The app gets the real destination

The SDK follows the tracked link with the provider and hands your code the page it leads to, as a path and destination_url.

What is included

  • Presets for SendGrid, Mailgun, SparkPost, Customer.io and Iterable, and Braze on SendGrid or SparkPost. Any other provider by its tracking host and click path.
  • Open pixels, unsubscribe and preference pages stay in the browser.
  • If the email links to one of your own DL2App links, the app receives that link with its path and data.
  • A certificate is issued automatically, as for a custom domain.

Where it stops

  • Counts as one of the plan’s custom domains.
  • Clicks are counted by your email provider, not as DL2App clicks, unless the email links to a DL2App link.
  • The provider presets are typical values. Compare them with a tracked link from one of your own emails before you change DNS.
  • Until users have the app update that adds the domain, email links open the browser as before.
