Test a custom URL scheme on a real phone

A myapp:// link cannot be typed into a phone's address bar. Enter it here, scan the code with the phone, and tap the button on the page that opens.

Free. No account, no email.

The scheme registered in your app, then whatever path and parameters it expects.

  1. Type the link above.
  2. Scan the code with the phone that has your app, using its camera.
  3. On the page that opens, tap the button. Your app should come to the front.
The QR code and the test page appear here once you type a link.

If nothing happens when you tap

  • The app is not installed on that phone, or the installed build is older than the one that registers the scheme.
  • The scheme is not registered. On iOS it belongs under URL Types in your target's Info tab. On Android it is an intent filter with a data element naming the scheme.
  • The spelling differs. The scheme is matched exactly as registered. Stick to lowercase letters and digits.
  • The app opens but does nothing. The scheme works and the handler does not. Log the incoming URL first, then your routing.

Test from a computer instead

Terminal
# iOS Simulator
xcrun simctl openurl booted "myapp://item/42"

# Android device or emulator
adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.VIEW -d "myapp://item/42"

Why not to share these links

A custom scheme is fine inside your own app and for testing. As a link you give to people it has three problems: it does nothing at all when the app is not installed, any other app can register the same scheme, and most chat apps and social networks do not make it tappable. Links meant for people should be https links that the app claims, which is what the setup snippets configure.

Custom schemes fail silently when the app is missing. A DL2App link is an ordinary https address that opens the app when it is there, goes to the right store when it is not, and can still hand your app the same path.
