After Firebase Dynamic Links

Firebase Dynamic Links gave app developers three things for free: links that opened the app or the store, links that survived an install, and previews in chats and social posts. Google shut it down, and every page.link address now returns an error, with no way to keep or transfer the domain.

Google's suggested replacement is native Universal Links and App Links. Those open an installed app. They do not carry a link through an install, which is the part Google's own spokesperson said native links cannot replace.

When you do not need a replacement

  • If your app only needs to open from links when it is already installed, native Universal Links and App Links cost nothing and need no service at all. You host two small files yourself.

What is different about DL2App

  • The link survives an install, which native links alone do not do.
  • Your old link parameters map across, with anything not carried shown per row.
  • If your Dynamic Links were on your own domain, you can keep the same addresses.
  • The service states in writing what happens to your links if it ever closes, because this migration is what a silent shutdown costs.

What we are not sure of

  • Several replacements for Dynamic Links have launched since 2023, and a new service can disappear too. Whichever you choose, put links on a domain you own and keep an export.
  • We found no other vendor with an importer for Dynamic Link parameters, but that is absence of evidence, not proof.
  • Rows marked “not recorded” mean our research has no information, not that the feature is missing.

Start with one link

The free plan has no time limit and needs no card. Create a project, add your app, and send yourself the link.
